Our Children our Future - Southampton East are Involved
Following a District 1110 Workshop Initiative in May 2009, (see: www.rotary1110.org.uk and Report for "Our Children our Future"), Southampton East Rotary Club has been supporting the work done by Southampton City Council's Strengthening Families Group, run by Islay Downey and Kari Roberts on Parenting.
One Southampton East member, arranges transportation for two ladies who have been helped by the Strengthening Families Programme to get them to and back from a new Group that has been started in the Mansbridge Area on Thursdays to help other parents on this new course. A small group of other members help get Parents and Children to a weekly Tuesday programme at St. Paul's Church Bursledon, where parents and children spend an hour before and after a 2 course meal, being helped with parenting skills.
The Club has now provided Northam Community Youth Club with £3000 which will fund a youth worker for the Junior Section. One of our members, John Jarvis, whose business is local to Northam cycled from Lands End To John 'O' Groats and raised £1500 towards the £3000 grant. We will be working with Southampton City Council to try and get a Community Interact Club started in the Northam Community Youth Club Senior Section.
Five Southampton based Rotary Clubs have joined together and in conjunction with Nick Murphy and Clive Webster Directors at Southampton City Council, have agreed to support Woodlands School Harefield which is a National Challenge School. A programme of Numeracy and Literacy Mentoring will start for Students in the Autumn Term 2010 facilitated by trained Club Members through the Solent Education Business Partnership. A group of 10 students were taken to Kids Out at Paultons Park in June, from the Schools Nurture Group, a group of children who have all experienced parental bereavement recently.
We also hope to help fund Woodland's Rock, Music and Dance Challenge national aspirations as part of the Southampton Group of Club's involvement .
